Why Do Lifters Need Wrist Wraps for Heavy Pressing Movements?
Wrist wraps solve one specific mechanical problem: the wrist is not built to carry axial load, yet every bench press, overhead press, and push-up drives compression straight through it.
- Alignment. Wrist wraps hold the wrist in neutral extension of roughly 15 to 20 degrees during pressing, preventing the hyperextended bent-wrist position that shifts load off the palm heel and into the joint capsule.
- Carpal stability. Circumferential compression limits medial-lateral wrist sway during unilateral movements, which matters for heavy dumbbell pressing and loaded overhead work.
- Tolerable pressing. By offloading the wrist soft tissue, wraps make heavy pressing tolerable and make the joint feel more stable under the bar. Wraps do not add strength on their own, so treat them as joint protection rather than a performance aid.
From my practice treating repetitive strain injuries in lifters, most of the chronic wrist pain I see traces back to two correctable things: sloppy wrap technique, and a load that has run ahead of what the joint can recover from. I recommend 36-inch wraps for most lifters, long enough to layer properly while keeping the grip sensitivity you need during the lift.
